Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on July 18, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a mother of white and black parents. She was raised on her mom's side. She stated that her skin color was the primary reason that made her feel disregarded by her peers as an infant. [3] Her parents were struggling financially and had to move 16 times to take on her father's work. Russell spoke out about how despite all the hardships, Russell said that she was always interested in creativity in her early years. She wanted to be ballet dancer, then to become an artist. Russell was just 18 when she took her first acting class. She took money from her job in order to purchase a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. She would return to work after her funds ran out , before auditioning again. This was the way she worked for four years, until she was offered her first TV part.
